Friday Five

In the world of beauty there are an endless amount of beauty tips and rules to follow.  Over the years, I have learned a thing or two about some very important beauty tips from my mom (I should have listened to her sooner), make-up artists, friends, and my short career in a cosmetics department (I do miss the free make-up).

Today, I’m going to share with you my five favorite beauty tips that I follow daily! And if you’re not doing these things you should!

  1. Always remove your make-up before going to bed and apply a night cream no matter how tired you are.
  2. Make sure to exfoliate your lips prior to applying lipstick.  Doing so will make your lips look more plump and help your lipstick stay on longer.
  3. Never pump your mascara & get a new one every 3 months!  The only thing it does is dry out your mascara!
  4. Clean your make-up brushes and sponges once a week.  Swirl the brushes around in warm water and a mild soap. This helps to fight against potential bacteria and breakouts.
  5. Always wear a sunscreen!

And now for five make-up trends I won’t be doing…EVER!

  1. Adding faux freckle, this trend is just plain crazy.  I just don’t get it.  The girls I have seen it on just looks horrible and their skin looks dirty.
  2. Wearing Unicorn make-up.  These women paint their faces pink and glittery, great for Halloween, but not for daily life.
  3. Noticeable contouring.  Make-up needs to enhance the beauty each person has.  The beauty of the face needs to stand out not the make-up.
  4. Over spray-tanned skin.  If you are looking like a Oompa Loompa you’ve gone too far with the spray tan.
  5. Overly thin or thick eyebrows.  Eyebrows are to enhance the eye not over power them.

What is your favorite beauty tip?  What beauty trend would you never do?

Until Next Time…

Get Your Lipstick to Stay On

Have you ever been out with family and friends having a great time laughing and chatting it up?  You take a moment to go to the restroom, check yourself in the mirror and realize all your lipstick has disappeared?  This happens to most of us all the time.  No one likes to take time out of our busy day let alone a night out to reapply our lipstick every couple of hours.

With the holidays right around the corner, I’ve got a few tips to help keep those beautiful rich colored lipsticks stay on your lips longer.

get your lipstick to stay on

Step One ~ Exfoliate   This is the most important step to getting your lipstick to last.  Exfoliation of your lips removes all the dry dead skin from your lips, so soft supple new skin can grow in its place.  I like using Fresh Sugar Lip Polish every few days.  Or you can use a soft tooth-brush to keep your lips looking their smoothest.

get your lipstick to stay on

Step Two ~ Hydrate   Drinking lots of water is great for your entire body, but it also helps keep the skin on our lips nice and plump.  So drink up!  In the winter months even if you drink your fill of water sometimes it’s just not enough to keep you lips at optimum hydration.  That’s why I turn to my favorite lip moisturizer.  Once I found this product I knew I never would need to look for another lip moisturizer again.  Want to know what it is?  Do ya? It’s Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream (it’s also great on your elbows and heels).

get your lipstick to stay on

Step Three ~ Primer   I use to think this was just to get us lipstick wearing faces to buy another product.  Then I tried one and I really noticed the difference.  Right now my favorite is MAC Prep + Prime Lip.  I have definitely seen a difference in my lipsticks lasting longer.  I like that this one is a color-free base, that is also oil-free and fragrance free.

Step Four ~ Lip Liner   I love Lip Liner and use it whenever I wear lipstick.  I can always achieve the full looking lip when I use a lip liner in conjunction with my lipstick.  Choose a lip liner that matches your lipstick.  You never want the liner to look like it is there.   Liner helps keep darker shades from bleeding into the tiny lines around your lips.  My favorites right now are: Clinique Quickliner Lip Pencil, Bobbi Brown Lip Liner, Marc Jacobs Outliner Lip Pencil, & NARS Velvet Lip Liner.

I learned a little trick years ago and have always used it for special occasions (it tends to dry your lips) to make your lipstick last through dinner. Once you outline your lips fill in your lips with the lip liner and then apply your lipstick.

Step Five ~ Lipstick   Apply a coat of lipstick and use a tissue to blot your lips.  Then dab the lipstick once again over your lips.  This will help the lipstick lock right on to your lips.  And don’t forget the finger pull (no, not that finger pull, silly) Place your finger in your mouth, press your lips against it and pull out your finger.  This helps remove the lipstick that would have ended up on your teeth!  Some of my favorites right now… NYX Matte, Charoltte Tilbury Matte Revolution LipstickRevlon Super Lustrous Lipstick.

**Some people like to dust their lips with translucent powder to set their lipstick.  I’m not a big fan of that, it tends to dull the lip color.

How well do you take care of yourself?

Taking care of yourself

Taking care of ourselves is usually one of the last things on our minds when there are so many others that need us.  When life gets busy, your body needs you the most.  Give it the attention it needs and don’t feel guilty about it.  Take care of yourself so you can take care of others properly. Try to set time for yourself daily.

Everyone needs “me” time.  Here are a few ideas…

Unplug from all electronics.

Light your favorite candle and relax.

Buy yourself your favorite flowers, weekly.

Go grab dessert with your best friend.

When someone offers you a compliment, just say “Thank You”.

Take a long warm bath with Epsom Salts and essential oils.

Put a few drops of lavender oil on your pillow.

Go to bed early.

Go for a walk and notice the beauty around you.

Turn off the news, listen to music and sing out loud.

Drink water with your favorite fruit infused in it.

Binge watch your favorite TV show.

Try something you have always wanted to, but never made the time for.

Wear your favorite perfume to bed.

Invite a friend over and cook dinner together.

Meditate (here’s a good place to start Calm)

Watch a funny movie.

Take yourself out on a date.

Get and give at least 1 hug a day.

Drink a warm glass of lemon water every morning.

Is Your Smile Brilliant?

Do you love taking selfies, but when you look at your picture all you notice is your yellow teeth?

 I’ve got the solution,

Smile Brilliant!

Recently, when I was taking a few selfies with my daughters, I noticed just how yellow all of our teeth had gotten.  Too much coffee and red wine.  We’ve tried the whitening strips you buy at the store and they are expensive yet never seem to whiten our teeth to any noticeable amount.  So, when the wonderful staff at Smile Brilliant offered to send me a kit to try, I was elated!  Mia, Nina, and I played rock, paper scissors, to find out who was going to be the lucky one of us to get to try out the Smile Brilliant product.

And the winner is…

Mia!

Smile Brilliant

Did you know to get your teeth whitened at a dentist office can cost as much as $700+ (depending on the area)?  When I did a little research on the Smile Brillant company I learned that they use the same ingredients as the whitening products used by many cosmetic dentists.  In fact, Smile Brilliant’s lab has been providing teeth whitening services to cosmetic dentists for over a decade. Same great product for a fraction of the cost!

The Smile Brilliant Process:

Creating the custom molds (just like at the dentists office)

Smile Brilliant

Once you place your order, within days you will receive a kit to make your custom impressions.  The step by step instructions makes it a cinch.  Mix the blue and white paste together, place it in the blue tray (one at a time) and place it in your mouth.  Once the impression molds are completely dry just pop them in the postage paid envelope provided to you in your kit.

Receiving your custom fitting trays.

Smile Brilliant

We were so excited to receive Mia’s custom trays back.  She couldn’t wait to get started.

It’s easy with the step-by-step directions.  Place the gel provided into the custom molds and wear them from 30 minutes to 3 hours (you get to decide). Mia wore them for 45 minutes the first day and loved the results, so each time she wears them 45 minutes.  If you have sensitive teeth there is desensitizing gel provide in the kit.

Smile Brillant
Using the custom trays. The first whitening session. The second whitening session.

And the best part…you get a beautiful smile and you never have to leave your home!

Goodbye Old Makeup

Is it time for you to say goodbye to some of your favorite makeup?  Here’s a guide to know when to hold them and know when it’s time to say, goodbye old makeup.

Goodbye Old Makeup

There is a good chance you used an expired mascara this morning.  We, women, tend to hoard makeup.  Buying new but never throwing out the old.  It is time to stop that!  How long do you keep using your mascara? 4 months, 5 months?  Did you know the recommended time to use mascara once it is opened is 3 months?

  • Don’t keep makeup in your car. The extreme temperatures make your products go bad more quickly plus in the heat, your lipsticks and eyeliners will melt.

  • When using a product that comes in a jar or bottle, always use a cosmetic spatula to transfer the product from the bottle instead of your fingers which can pass bacteria to your products.

  • Once you open a new product the time starts ticking away for when you need to get rid of that item.  Write the date on the product with a sharpie.

  • DO NOT share makeup with anyone!  If you let a friend use your makeup give it to them for keeps!

  • Keep makeup pencil sharpeners clean so you don’t spread bacteria once you sharpen that pencil.

With all this information, please use common sense when deciding if your “old” makeup is ok to use. If your lipstick doesn’t smell the same as it did when it was brand new anymore, if your nail polish is separating with a funky color or your lipgloss is gunky, it’s time to say goodbye old makeup!

February Make-Up Favs

My February Make-Up Favs

February Make-up Favs

I don’t know about you, but 9 times out of 10, I can’t pass a make-up counter without buying something new to try out.  Check back monthly to find out my new make-up favs!

One: Maybelline The Falsies Volum Express Patented Spoon Brush fans out lashes from corner-to-corner, while our Pro-Keratin formula instantly builds volume without clumping.  I really like the way this brush separates the lashes and for a waterproof mascara how easy it is to remove.

Two:  Loreal Magic Lumi PrimerThe first time I used this product I could not believe how alive my skin looked.  It smooth the texture of my skin for a even natural looking complexion.  I love that this one product is a universal shade that is suitable for all skin types and skin tones.

Three:  Fleur DeForce, Quad Eye Shadow – If you follow You Tubers then you MUST follow Fleur DeForce Beauty Fashion Lifestyle.  She and her husband are absolutely adorable!  She came out with a make-up line a little while back and I was fortunate to get a few of her products and one of my favorite items is her eye shadows. The full-coverage formulas are incredibly easy to blend and Fleur’s can’t-go-wrong colourways make it easy to craft the loveliest of looks with minimal effort. The palette comes complete with a prestige style brush applicator for smooth application on-the-go.

Four:  Real Techniques Miracle Complexion SpongeI love this sponge.  I don’t always wear liquid foundation, but when I do, I always use this sponge.  My make-up goes on so smooth and the rounded corners of the sponge get in all the nooks and carnies on my face.

Five:  Urban Decay All Nighter – This is the perfect product if your make-up needs to stay on a long, long time, it has serious staying power.  All Nighter keeps your make-up looking fresh and gorgeous with that just applied look for up to 16 hours – without melting, cracking, fading, or settling into fine lines.  The sprayer delivers a microfine mist that goes on so light, you’ll hardly feel it – and once you’ve applied it, you won’t even know it’s there. If you’ve tried other setting sprays that feel sticky or tight on your skin, you’ll be amazed by how different this is.

Six:  Revlon Rose Glow Highlighting Palette – I really like the look of these softly shimmered shades when I want to give my face that sun kissed look without having to subject my skin to the harmful rays of the sun.  They are super easy to blend and they give my face that ever so slight sculpted look.

What are your make-up favs this month?

**None of these items were sponsored or gifted, although, there are some affiliate links.  If you purchase any of these items though my site I will receive a small sum that helps defray the costs associated with this blog, with no addition cost to you..  Thank you.

Homemade Coffee and Sugar Body Scrub with Printable

I’m kind of a nut when it comes to reading information on the internet and then giving it a try.  Sometimes they work and other times they are a huge failure!  A few years ago, I read that putting used coffee grounds at the base of rose bushes helps them bloom more, and what do you know, it actually helped.  Now, I have a new use for those coffee grounds!

I read that coffee can do wonders for the skin. Coffee is naturally an anti-inflammatory and a antioxidant, which when used on the skin can improve the texture (helps reduce cellulite, YAY!) and at the same time increase the circulation to your skin.

It got me thinking…  About that organic store that sells facial, body, and lip scrubs.  I love their products, but it can get a little costly.  I made my own little body scrubs and if I do say so myself they came out pretty great!  So, friends might or might not be getting these as hostess gifts for their holiday parties I’m attending.
Homemade Coffee and Sugar Scrub

It is so very easy to do, and I’m sure most people have all the ingredients already home.

Step One: Mix the coconut oil with the coffee grounds and sugar.  I like using raw sugar for it’s gritty texture, but you can use regular table sugar if that’s what you have on hand.

Homemade Coffee and Sugar Scrub

Step Two: Place the mixture in to a mini muffin tray or a ice cube tray and place the tray into the freezer to harden.  It took my coffee and sugar body scrub about 1 hour to set up.

Homemade Coffee and Sugar Scrub

They are a perfect size!

For my hostess gifts I put some coffee beans in the bottom of a small glass jar and then I placed a few of the coffee and sugar scrubs on top.  I even made a cute printable tag.Homemade Coffee and Sugar Scrub

Instead of using harsh scrubs with chemicals, isn’t it better to nourish your skin with natural products? And if you are like me and use the coffee grounds you made your coffee with, you are recycling – win, win!

Beauty Rules: Keeping Skin Safe In The Cold Weather

Beauty Rules, skin careIt’s that time of the year when there is a certain energy in the air!  Spending time with family and friends, indulging in foods we shouldn’t and maybe having a cocktail or two more than we normally do.

It is also a time of year when the temperatures have dropped and wind and rain are whipping around us.  This can leave our skin feeling dry, itchy, rough, and tight.   Now is the time to change your daily skin routine before it’s too late!

Skin is the barrier that helps keep germs and other foreign invaders out of our body, so we must keep our skin in tip top shape by keeping it healthy so it can do it’s job.

I’m going to share with you my beauty rules for this cold weather season.

One: There is nothing like taking a long hot shower or bath on a chilly morning, but it’s best for your skin to turn that water to lukewarm and avoid stripping away the delicate oils of our skin.

Two: Moisturize Immediately after your shower.  I like to use baby oil on my skin prior to drying off, wait a few moments and then towel dry.  Throughout the day moisturize your hands and face as these areas are the most exposed to the elements.  Apply a replenishing moisturizer to your entire body in every evening.

Three: Drink plenty of water!  This is so very important.  I know there is nothing more tasty than a warm drink (like a chestnut praline latte) but our skin needs to stay hydrated from the inside out to stay healthy, and water is the best way.  A great way to start the day is to drink a warm cup of water with a half of lemon juice squeezed in.  The lemon juice contains vitamin C which can help boost the body’s collagen, a protein that maintains skin.

Four: Exfoliate dead skin, especially on face, hands, and feet. A moisturizer will not be able to penetrate through several layers of dead skin cells.  Use a exfoliating mask once a week on your face and hands and don’t forget about your lips, I love this one for the lips, then use a lip moisturizer or chap stick.  I put Vaseline on my lips at night to keep them moisturized.

Five: Change your skin care products to more moisturizing ones in the cold months.  For people with Eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis winter months are extra harsh on your skin. Make sure you are using products for sensitive skin, don’t forget about including your laundry detergent in those products.

Until Next Time…

Best Tips For A Safe Mani/Pedi

Best Tips for a Safe Mani-Pedi, manicure, pedicure, nail salon, pampering

I’m not here trying to scare you, but………

Millions of women and men take their hard earned money to enjoy lives little luxuries and a mani/pedi is definitely one of those luxuries.  So, before you go to your favorite salon take a look at my best tips for a safe mani/pedi!

  1. Arrive early to your appointment to make sure the salon is maintained properly. Watch how the footbaths are cleaned and disinfected between each client. Also, great indicator is the restroom, if it is kept clean chances are the rest of the salon will be too.  Make sure trash containers are not overflowing and that the shelves are dusted.  A clean salon is a great way to tell the owner and technicians value cleanliness.  If the salon is not clean, chances are the footbaths and implements aren’t either.

  2. Salon License should be posted in plain site on the wall, along with the technicians licenses.

  3. Single Use Items Emery Board, Buffing Block, Orange Sticks, Pumices and Toe Separators.  These items should never be used on more that one client.  They all can harbor bacteria and fungus with the potential to be passed from client to client if used on more that one person. Cuticle oil should be used with a dropper rather than a brush.  Brushes are not sanitary to use on more than one client.

  4. How does the technician sterilize their tools?  You want to make sure they are using a bottle of disinfectant.  The disinfectant should not appear cloudy or dirty looking.  The most effective way to make sure the implements are clean it to bring your own and clean them yourself.  Just purchase what your technician uses on you at your local drug store.  No salon should have a problem with you bring your own tools.

  5. Make sure the technician washes her hands before she gets started on your nails or feet.  Request that they wash their hands or wear gloves.  Be very careful of a technician with fake nails, it is very hard to clean the area between the real nail and the fake nail.

  6. Don’t shave your legs 24 hours prior to getting a pedicure.  Small cuts from shaving can leave small skin openings where bacteria can enter.  If you have a cut, wait until it is completely healed before getting a pedicure.

  7. Whirlpool footbaths  You should NEVER place your feet into a footbath with jets.  It is impossible for a salon to clean the jet area completely.  The jets are suppose to be cleaned by a 10 minute bleach bath in-between each and every customer (most salons do not have time for this, they try to get you in and out as quickly as possible).  This type of footbath puts your health at risk each time you put your foot in one.  In an extreme case in Texas, a woman died after contracting a staph infection from a whirlpool footbath.  The safest footpath is the basin type where the technician places a bag over the tub.  When they are done with each client they just throw out the bag with all the water.

  8. Don’t let the technician cut your cuticles! Cuticles are a barrier of protection for your nails.  When your cuticles are cut you are opening the door to infection.  Cutting your cuticles can also cause ridges on your nails, white spots, or white lines.  Push back your cuticles when you are in the shower and the cuticles are soft.

  9. Don’t let the technician scrape callused skin off of your feet!  Doing this can put you at a higher risk for infection.  This procedure needs to be done by a podiatrist only.

  10. Some salons dilute their nail polishes when they become dry or clumpy with nail polish remover.  This practice compromises the quality of the nail polish, causing the polish to chip easily.  The best way to make sure you are getting a color that will last, and to avoid any spreading of germs, bring your own polish (this way you have the correct color for touch ups)

Always practice best tips for a safe mani/pedi!

Until Next Time…
